Soil Engineering and Geophysical Testing
Course Description:
As the demand for infrastructure development continues to grow, ensuring the stability and safety of foundations and structures is paramount. This comprehensive course delves into the principles and practices of soil engineering and geophysical testing, equipping participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to assess soil properties, conduct subsurface investigations, and design safe and sustainable foundations.
Through a blend of theoretical and practical sessions, participants will gain a thorough understanding of the fundamental concepts of soil mechanics, including soil classification, stress-strain relationships, and shear strength. They will explore various methods of soil sampling and testing, both in the laboratory and in the field, to determine soil properties such as moisture content, density, compressibility, and permeability. Participants will also delve into the principles of geophysical testing, including seismic refraction, electrical resistivity, and ground penetrating radar (GPR), and learn how to apply these techniques to map subsurface conditions and identify potential hazards.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the fundamental principles of soil mechanics
- Classify soils according to the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS)
- Conduct laboratory and field tests to determine soil properties
- Analyze soil data and interpret soil behavior
- Apply geophysical testing methods to investigate subsurface conditions
- Identify potential hazards and assess foundation suitability
- Design safe and sustainable foundations for various structures
- Ensure the stability and safety of infrastructure projects
